How to Install Vinyl Decals

What you'll need

• —A mild cleaner or rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth
• —A credit card or plastic squeegee
• —Masking tape, for positioning larger decals
• —A spray bottle of water with one drop of dish soap (wet method only)

Dry installation (recommended)

The standard method for most decals. The adhesive bonds immediately, so take your time positioning before anything touches the surface.

   Clean the surface

   Wipe the window or surface with a mild cleaner or rubbing alcohol and let it dry completely. Skip ammonia-heavy cleaners right before application — residue weakens the adhesive. Vinyl sticks best between roughly 50–90°F.

   Position the decal

   Hold the decal in place and mark its position with small pieces of masking tape. For larger decals, tape a hinge along the entire top edge so the decal can fold down into exactly the right spot.

   Peel the backing

   Peel the paper backing layer away slowly and at a low angle. Only the vinyl and the clear transfer layer should remain on top. If any vinyl lifts with the backing, lay it back down and rub firmly over that spot before trying again.

   Apply with a card

   Lower the decal onto the surface and rub firmly over the whole design with a credit card or squeegee, working from the center outward to push air bubbles to the edges.

   Remove the transfer layer

   Peel the clear transfer layer back slowly from a corner, keeping it low and folded against itself rather than pulling straight up. Only the vinyl decal should remain. Done!

Wet installation (for large decals)

Best for decals over about 12 inches, long vinyl lettering, and glass — the soapy water lets you slide the decal into position before the adhesive grabs.

   Clean the surface exactly as you would for a dry install, then mist it lightly with water mixed with a single drop of dish soap.

   Peel the paper backing off the decal.

   Place the decal on the wet surface — the solution lets you slide it into perfect position before it grabs.

   Squeegee firmly from the center outward to press out the water and air. Go over every part of the design twice.

   Pat the edges dry, wait 10–15 minutes for the adhesive to grab, then peel the transfer layer back slowly against itself.

   Let the decal cure for 24 hours before washing the surface.

Quick tips

• —Temperature matters more than technique — apply between roughly 50–90°F (10–32°C). Cold stops the adhesive from grabbing; heat makes the vinyl stretchy.
• —Always peel slowly and at a low angle, folding layers back against themselves instead of pulling upward.
• —Never stretch the vinyl while positioning it — it will shrink back and pull at the edges later.
• —Tiny bubbles usually disappear on their own within a few sunny days. For stubborn ones, prick the edge with a pin and press the air out.
• —On vehicles, wait 24–48 hours before washing, and avoid aiming a pressure washer directly at the decal edges.
